Travel Award to Promote Equity

The Society for Pediatric and Perinatal Epidemiologic Research (SPER) invites applicants for consideration for the Travel Award to Promote Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. The deadline for submission is February 3, 2025 at 11:59 PM PT.

Eligibility Requirements

1. Identifies with one or more of the following categories:

  • An individual from a racial or ethnic group that is underrepresented in health-related sciences in the United States (including individuals identifying as: Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian or Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander or another underrepresented group).
  • An individual with a disability
  • An individual who identifies as being from an economically or educationally disadvantaged background
  • An individual who identifies as a sexual and/or gender minority (LGBTQ+) 
  • An individual from an institution that qualifies for NIH Academic Research Enhancement Awards (R15s)

2. Presently a graduate or medical student, postdoctoral fellow, medical resident, research trainee, clinical fellow, or early-career investigator (no more than 10 years since completion of terminal degree)

3. Submission of an abstract to this year’s Annual Meeting is preferred, but not required. Attendance at the Annual Meeting is expected of award winners. The winner is also expected to have an active Society membership at the time of meeting registration.
(Note: annual student/fellow membership is greatly discounted)

Application Procedure

The following documents must be submitted to be considered for the award. Documents should be submitted in a single PDF file named as the candidate’s last name with the initials TAPE appended at the beginning (i.e., TAPE_lastname):

  • A brief statement (300 words or less) describing 1) the anticipated impact of participating in the SPER Annual Meeting on the candidate’s career; and 2) one career accomplishment of which the candidate is particularly proud.
  • Statement confirming the candidate meets the award eligibility criteria: (1) Identifies with a group as specified above; (2) trainee or within 10 years of terminal degree; (3) will attend the SPER Annual Meeting and whether has or will submit an abstract to the Annual Meeting.
  • Curriculum vitae

Attendance to the annual meeting is required to receive the award. WInners will be reimbursed up to $750 for domestic and $1500 for international travel. Travel expense receipts must be submitted in order to receive funds. The winner will also receive $500 plus two-night hotel stay, and SPER Meeting registration.

Evaluation criteria (to be scored by award reviewers in equal weight):

(1) Impact of participation in the SPER Annual Meeting ont he candidate’s career.

(2) Educational and career accomplishments of the candidate.
