Suzan Carmichael, President

We hope you can join us in Miami for our upcoming 29th Annual Meeting on June 20th and 21st.  Of course it will be intellectually interesting, but with a backdrop of Miami culture and Florida wildlife, you could also make it an adventure…

We have been hard at work putting all the details together for the meeting, which truly takes a village.  You can get more information about the meeting in this newsletter and on our web-site, but here are some highlights.

  • The pre-conference Advanced Methods Workshops on Monday, June 20th (2:00-4:30pm) will cover G estimation and latent growth curve analysis;
  • The meeting will start on Monday evening with a panel discussion from 5:00-6:30pm, entitled “Epidemiologic Perspectives on Precision Medicine.” Tuesday, June 21st, will include a keynote address from Sandro Galea, MD, DrPH, Dean, Professor, School of Public Health, Boston University entitled, “The principles of population health science: Implications for perinatal and pediatric epidemiology research.”  Together, surely these will provoke some interesting discussion.
  • Round Table discussions will occur from 7:00-8:00am Tuesday.
  • Plenary sessions will occur all day Tuesday and include a handful of “Speed” poster presentations. This is something new for our meeting, an attempt to find a way to highlight the numerous posters that are presented.
  • The business meeting starts immediately after the scientific sessions on Tuesday afternoon. Please attend! The continued health of SPER absolutely depends on your involvement.
  • For the first time, we are an official sponsor of the Epidemiology Congress of the Americas, which will be held June 21-24. Many of our members will be presenting interesting work there, and SPER is sponsoring a session entitled “A Critical Period? Fetal Exposures and Adult Health”.
  • For the truly committed, join the 2016 Congress 5K Fun Run or 1 mile Walk on Wednesday, June 22nd at 6:00am. Click here for more information.

I also want to say thank you to many people:  our Executive Committee for their steadfast commitment to keeping things running smoothly, Sue Bevan for graciously and seamlessly handling so many of our administrative tasks, everyone who submitted or co-authored or reviewed an abstract, everyone who ran for Office, everyone who submitted an application or sponsored someone for one of our Awards, and our Student Representative, Cassie Gibbs Pickens, who is keeping us ‘present’ on social media & organized the Advanced Methods Workshop. This is our village!

See you in Miami!  -Suzan
