Multiple Postdoctoral Fellow Positions in Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology, Causal Inference, and Health Policy or Health Services Research

Description

Several postdoctoral fellow positions are available in the Department of Biostatistics, Epidemiology, and Informatics (DBEI) at University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine.

Epidemiology, Health Policy, and Health Services research: The fellow will primarily study the impact of telehealth prenatal care and telehealth policies on disparities in severe maternal morbidity (SMM), utilizing causal inference methods for observational data. The fellow will have direct access to national Medicaid claims and encounter data (T-MSIS). The fellow will be based in the Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology group in DBEI and will have additional touch points as a PolicyLab Affiliate Trainee at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Candidates with experience working with claims data, causal inference and/or target trial approaches will be ideal.

Causal Inference: The fellow will primarily work on a PCORI-funded project to develop and apply causal inference and machine learning methods to reconcile conflicting results from randomized trials, using data from randomized trials in preterm birth prevention. The fellow will be based jointly in the Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology group and the Center for Causal Inference in DBEI. The ideal candidate will have experience working with machine learning methods and/or causal inference methods.

Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology: The fellow will play a key role in advancing research on reproductive and perinatal epidemiology projects, utilizing cutting-edge epidemiologic methods to address critical questions in maternal and child health. With access to multiple robust data sources, including the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes (ECHO) program and Optum, among others, the fellow will explore a wide range of research topics related to maternal health, child development, and healthcare disparities.

The candidates will embark on all activities of epidemiologic research and will have opportunities to pursue related projects to support development of their research portfolio, with the goal of fostering a future as an independent leader in the field. The fellow will be supported in a multidisciplinary team structure, with mentored and collaborative opportunities for analyses, manuscripts, and grant writing. The fellows will be based in the Reproductive and Perinatal Epidemiology group in DBEI and will have the opportunity to engage with faculty and other trainees across DBEI, the Center for Causal Inference, CHOP, and the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at UPenn. The candidate must have a doctoral degree in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Statistics, Health Economics, Public Health, or a related field. Applicants with related experience are encouraged to apply even if they do not have prior experience in reproductive or perinatal epidemiology. Excellent writing and analytic skills are needed for this position. The candidate should send a cover letter, research statement, and CV for review to Mae Phelps (Mae.Phelps@Pennmedicine.upenn.edu). Start date is Summer/Fall 2025.

The University of Pennsylvania is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We seek candidates who embrace and reflect diversity in the broadest sense. Historically marginalized and underrepresented populations are encouraged to apply.
